For Utopia: The (Limits of the) Utopian Function in Late Capitalist Society

Ruth Levitas (1949) is Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Bristol. Her two principal areas of research are utopianism and social exclusion. Her book The Concept of Utopia (1990) covers the history of utopian thought and examines the relationship between utopia and the social sciences, the arts, history and memory. In her other large-scale study, The Inclusive Society? Social Exclusion and New Labour (1998), she introduces the concept of social exclusion as part of the new political language and theorizes on problems related to contemporary political ideologies, poverty, inequality and social inclusion/exclusion.
